A snapshot of Wigan society in 1939. The imbalance of males and females in the population is possibly a reflection of the number of men lost in WW1. The ratios for England and Wales are the same as for Wigan.
By comparison the male female balance in Ashton is 50.50. The most popular surnames are Cunliffe, Smith, Jones and Lowe. For female occupations number 2 is textile weaving and number three is stated as school teacher.

The ratio between females/males carried on into the 60s/70s.
There seemed to be more girls at the Casino than lads !!
I wasn't complaining ;0)
