Always the first port of call for us back in the 60s. We'd sit there, each of us wearing suits, each of us reading the 'Football Pink' and Eric Thompson's match report on the front page reporting on the game we'd watched earlier (and this was before the digital advances of today!).And each of us drinking the best pint of Walker's bitter in Wigan. Then we'd move to the Clarence, the Bier Keller, and sometimes the Casino/Palais. But always the Pacific Ocean for their Special with the fried egg on top! Happy Days!

Sounds like a good day to me Alan, while the Football Pink maintains its certain ring. I remember seeing Arthur Yarwood in this pub, about the time he made his TV appearance.

A man after my own heart Alan
Many's the time I've sat in there suited and booted with me mates in the 60s waiting to do what you have said.
Maybe the Bier Kellar, Ball and Boot and then Casino.
And to top it off The Happy Palace for a Saigon Special with or without a girl on your arm !!

I was in the vault one night enjoying a game of fives and threes when in came a young mouth on legs who was, apparently desperate for a drink, so desperate that he felt the need to bang loudly on the bar to attract the Landlord's attention. The Landlord, who was serving in the other bar, popped his head round and said "I'll not be a minute lad, I'm serving a customer". This was too much for the young hero and he returned to banging on the bar again. Seconds later the Landlord appeared in the vault.....preceded by two large Alsatian dogs, both showing bared teeth, slavering at the mouth and looking like they hadn't seen a butcher's bone for a month.
Our young Lochinvar suddenly remembered a prior appointment that was far more important than his raging thirst and headed back west as fast as his legs could carry him!

The decorative signage showing " Barkers " & " Crofters Arms "
has often intrigued me, Where was Barkers Brewery ??. I know
that during my time it was a Walkers pub, and later it would
have become Tetleys.

Ray - Barkers Brewery was in Huyton. The signage on the Market St side of the building reads 'Barkers Huyton Ales'.
The brewery, founded in the 1820s, was on Archway Road Huyton, and survived into the 20th century. A Wetherspoons pub called The Barkers Brewery now stands on the site.

Barkers brewery was opposite Huyton Parish Church on the corner of Bluebell Lane, it's now a Wetherspoons.

MickD and H Potter, Thank you for the Barkers Brewery info.
I know exactly where you mean, it was " Rose & Crown " in
my younger days. I went in there a few times when I lived
at Belle Vale, just 2 miles away. Cheers, Ray.

Never heard of Barkers Brewery.
When I was a teenager, it was Walkers and Tetleys from Leeds. There were Higson and Bents pubs from Liverpool which I frequented. And thank you lads for the info on Barkers.
