Anyone else remember the unusual bar in this place years ago, you couldn't help looking at the dates why waiting for your pint

Many a Sunday afternoon used to park the car on Wigan Lane and walk down the steps (can't remember the name of them) and carry on to the river/canal (can't remember which, old age setting in) and walk to the Crawford Arms for lunch.

Do you mean the 'Penny Bar' Dougie. The bar top had hundreds of pennies beneath a sheet of perspex.

Linda, the steps I called "64 steps" and used to walk that way sometimes to Haigh Hall. Seeing this photo again brings to mind that I have only been in it twice -both time late 1959 ( under age) on my way to a "Musical Evening" with the 4A gang from Gidlow School (both sexes). In my diary the 5 Senior Service cigs bought at the bar cost 1/6d. The party was at one of the boys parents farm near Haigh and I walked from Standish both ways. Others came from the Beech Hill & Swinley area. The 2nd time I called there a month later was to buy a bottle of cider for the party. The next time I visited a pub I was working on the M6. I past this again in 2018 out for a walk along the canal tow path and it was all boarded up.

Barrie, I think they are called 70 steps. I think there is a nameplate on the wall where they are on Wigan Lane

Yes Roy that's the one maybe it was short-lived that's why people may not have seen it

I think it’s 70 if you include all the steps from top to bottom, not just the steep descent
