Fine Maties on board, Tim. And, with more than a hint of the trireme, fine reflections on the water.

Interesting seeing how run down the Pier complex was 30 odd years ago to how run down it has become again in recent times. The recent building work will transform it yet again but it should never have been left to get in it's condition after the millions ploughed into it. I believe the Queen came to Wigan to unveil the new Orwell/The Way We Were Museum in the spring of 1986 so this picture would have been taken shortly before building work began on the site.

I remember visiting my daughter and her young son one day, when he sat my knee and started to tell me a story of him going on a ship on the sea with his school but had to get off because the waves were too big. I started to laugh at his imagination then my daughter explained that it was partly true has he had been on a trip with his class on a barge on the canal at wigan but had to get off because the waves were too big.i still don,t believe it
