Could this be the earliest dwellings in the Wigan Borough? This, and Peel Hall just half a mile away, are both built of brick indicating a seventeenth century date (a stone tablet in one of the gables of Kirkless Hall even once said BUILT 1663). However both Kirkless and Peel have internal cruck frame structures, suggesting they could date to the 14th or 15th centuries. In fact on the six inch OS map of 1849 they're both shown with moats around which also suggests a Medieval origin.

Interesting photo Bill. Lancashire has many historic halls & houses. Why is a dump ?

I read that Kirkless Hall & Kirkless Farmhouse was dedicated a Grade 11* listed building in June 1966 by Historic England.

There was a moat around the house, some thirty odd years ago when working at the council the owner of the left side of the house and a contractor was trying to locate the whereabouts of a septic tank to the far left of the building, upon digging down very black soil was uncovered which was said to be from the moat bottom, they even found the metal remains of a flintlock pistol, the wood parts having rotten away, it was wondered if it had fallen in the moat from someones pocket or had it been thrown in at one time and what other items from the past had been found when the tank was installed.

Is the building still split into two dwellings or has it now become one.

Last time we looked at it (6 years ago) it was split into two dwellings. The left side's new owner was (sensitively) restoring the interior. The right side was rented and seemingly the low rent was proving an obstruction to further investment in it (which was a shame).
