Curlers in getting ready for night out and new frock in bag. If only we knew.

It was a common sight back then to see ladies with rollers in their hair, covered by a headscarf. I remember Lennard's shoe-shop and I can remember having a knitted bonnet like the little girl is wearing. Fantastic photo. xx

I bet when she combed her hair out she sprayed it with Bel-Air lacquer. It came in liquid form in a glass bottle and you transferred it to a plastic puffer-bottle to spray it on your hair and the smell could strip paint!

Is that Albert Tatlock to the right of the women in curlers.

And not a plastic carrier bag in sight, though the downside is the strings of those paper carriers would cut into your fingers if you had too much shopping in them, and if it rained heavily before you got home you were lucky if they didn't disintegrate, seen many an orange rolling down Standishgate from Woolies crossing.

Metro cleaners at the top on the right used to borrow things from us at Johnsonís cleaners in 1969. The manageress was named Ronnie

Such carefree times seems like only yesterday. no muggings or terrorist attacks back then or mobile phones. when people talked to each other and helped each other.

Notice the Boots sign further up the arcade. If memory serves me right, that was a side entrance and the front of the Boots store was on Standishgate where the Halifax is now located. I seem to remember it closed in the late 1980s and moved to a two floor unit in the Galleries (this is now some NHS place next to the Works bookshop).
