I wonder what the building in the middle was? I used to walk past on my way to school. I always thought it was part of the old town hall.

Carl,it was The Conservative Club.

Another well worn walkway... Latimer's especially every Saturday on my list of errands. Mc Gregors when I worked at Aspinall's when they had run short of wallpapers or paint.

Loved Commercial Yard,so full of character.Remember going to the Commercial pub.

My boyfriend Peter, now my husband of 46 years, worked down Commercial Yard as a young lad at Sawbridge's Butchers. I remember going to Latimer's to buy fresh yeast, (which my Mam always called "barm" for domestic science lessons at school.

Another quaint piece of Wigan lost spent some money in that pub I remember the pasty and onion rings

My dad used to get barm Irene. As a child I was fascinated by its texture and how it crumbled and broke . Hard to describe if you don’t know it Funny how we remember some things , may sound odd to others .

Enjoyed many a pint in the Commercial, especially with my old mates from John Rigby in the sixties! We also called in for a quick one after working as temporary postmen on the Christmas post. Happy days. Great memories.

When I was a pupil at the TLS when I was flushed I would go the Conservative club for lunch. I think it was about 3/6 for 3 courses? Thought we were the BEES KNEES.
When I was older, the club was one of of our watering holes when we went around town on a Friday night. Started off in the Market then Conservative club, Stable Bar, Bodega, always finished up in the Clarence Cocktail bar.. then Home on last bus..

Yes, I used to get lunch at the Conservative Club. They had a 'Wet subsidises Dry' policy, so you got a great bargain.

I had a pint of bitter and the best steak pie that I have ever ever tasted in theer. It had homemade sliced pickled onions with it...Ney tasted owt like it since...No danger.

I also remember calling into Latimers for fresh Yeast (Barm) and ginger root as Dad made Ginger beer, I was on the way to pay Sheargolds every two weeks for a new electric radio no telly them days, my Mam made her own bread, ? am I right in saying dad had to put Water,Sugar, ginger,and Yeast in a pop bottle to foment and if the bottle top was not unscrewed from time to time sometime it would explode

My dad made what he called 'Herb Beer' I remember a lot of bottles in our pantry exploding. I don't know if that meant the concoctions were ready to drink, but it sure tasted good.
