Best pub in Wigan, best juke box too
Thank goodness this minute part of Wigan history was left (in part) undisturbed. I am always in awe when I see this building ( one of Wigan's oldest). The atmosphere is tangible, much more could have been done to preserve and enshrine the area around the Wiend.... It just 'reeks' with history of the Civil War and beyond. Cornwall has its treasured alleyways involving piracy , York with the Minster and The Shambles and Chester etc. Why not Wigan with its important part in history? We might not get the tourists to Wigan but the legacy should be handed down for its people. I like walking around here, too much is taken for granted and is unappreciated.
I couldn't agree more Veronica.
There was quite a few of those interesting alleyways Elizabeth as you know - 'Gone with the Wind' now. There's still one or two left though I think..
You'd beaten me to the Cornwall semblance, Veronica. Nicely.
The difference though, Philip, is in the smell of the fresh, salty sea breeze, wafting through the twisting, cobbled alleyways and the dulcet tones of the Cornish tongue, echoing 'Long John Silver' - "Arrh, Arrh ,Jim lad!"....
All the guts have been ripped out of Wigan by the Councilors past and present.
Those Councillors from the past ought to walk Wigan with balls and chains around their ankles for all eternity along these old passageways! If you ever ear a clanging noise when passing by - you will know what it is! I've recently watched Alistair Simm in " Christmas Carol" ! ;@))
Speak of the devil, Veronica. I'd re-joined the same version ( A News of the World dvd 'offer'.) just yesterday - I kid you not, after giving it a good half-hour the day before. It's in colour although a bit wishy-washy. I'd also played it a few years ago and was then left with the idea that Tiny Tim had passed-away; I realised yesterday that he had indeed survived.
This daft iPad changes words - should be 'hear'... Wonder if I will get a new one from Santa baby...
It really is the finite version with old Alistair starring - none of the other remakes ( even the Muppets can hold a candle to Christmas Carol) What a great actor he was, I watch anything on Ytube with him in it Philip.
Replace “Are there no Workhouses ?.” with “Are there no food banks?” and “Are there no Poorlaws?” With “Is there no Universal Credit?” and not much as changed since Scrooge’s time.
There are still a lot of Politicians in our poor benighted country labouring long and hard on “ponderous chains” to drag through all eternity.
