Once upon a time the tracks of the old Whelley Loop Line crossed the Canal here by means of a bridge. It was a rite of passage for the young lads of Ince to cross from one side of the Canal to the other by walking across the arches of the bridge.
On the right is the end of the Slag Tip or Rabbit Rocks as they were known. Behind them was once the site of Wigan Coal And Iron Company, a large area of land that was left derelict for many years after the Company moved to Irlam.
In recent years efforts have been made to reclaim the land for recreational purposes.

July 2001.

A few years ago I met Timmy Mallet on the bridge and we took photos.

Look at Brian's photo item number 14902.
Thanks DTease.

Looking at 14902 Garry it must have taken a lot of nerve for a 12/13 year old to walk across that arch.
Ha me! The things we do when we're young. We may be more sensible when we get older but we lose something on the way don't we?

Yes absolutely DTease, I've walked across the arch of that bridge and also the canal lock from one side to the other. Frightening.
