View from Rivington Pike, across Wilders Moor to the T.V Mast on Winter Hill.
This mast was built by B.I.C.C in 1965. It replaced the original transmitter built in 1956.
It’s a lot further than it looks across that moor.

I love moorland, it gives me the shivers on seeing it when travelling north. Do you know of a Hunters Hill DTease ?

Helen - Hunters Hill is to the West near Parbold Hill.

Thank you Carolaen. I have black & white photo of my Dad, sister & myself on a hill, in pencil on the back is written Hunters Hill. At that time we lived in Ormskirk Road, Holland Moor.

I've walked up the transmitter site on a handful of occasions and it is quite eary standing under it's shadow and looking up. I happen to think there is no better way to spend a good afternoon wrapped up on a clear Winter's Day, walking the dog around Winter Hill and just letting your mind wander off and forget about your stresses and wires. The views from up there are fantastic.

You are so right Chris, whenever I’m weighed down with cares and woes “I lift up mine eyes to the hills”, take myself off to Rivington and spend some time in the peace and solitude to be found up there. Works every time.

I have only been up to the Winter Hill television transmitter about a dozen times. It is one of the tallest structures in Britain at exactly 1000 feet, and of similar height to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

About 500 yards in front of the masts on this line of view, can be found Douglas Springs, the source of the River Douglas.
