College Avenue from the former car park on Millgate, looking across Library Street and down the narrow entry that leads to King Street.
The former Wigan Baths was on the left of this photo.

July 1999.

Many a time I can recall walking past the building, looking through the windows into the basement and seeing the trainee bricklayers practicing their craft.

The Library was on the ground floor for some time Helen, but I think it’s moved over the road to the new Life Centre now.
This building was world famous when it was the Mining and Technical College.

I remember when the library was there, I often used it then and before it moved there from what is now the History Museum. I was a member of the original library from age 14, I loved it.

I really enjoyed being a student at Wigan Tech.

Wish I could do it all again!

Went to this college in 1949/50, on a mining engineering course, I had to give up the course, as I was placed on shift work. A friend, at the college, on the same mining course Viji Kuma Sarna, from New Delhi, his father was the Indian Education Minister, two or three years later, I saw in the local paper, that he had passed the course, with credit.

Albert, I wonder if my Grandfather was still there in 1949/50, Thomas Bryson ? He was Head of Mining for some years, cant remember when he retired.

I used to go in Wallpaper Supplies just for a look round. It was like Aladdin’s cave in there. Nails, screws Hammers chisels, you name it and you would find it in there somewhere.

So long ago Helen of Troy. The only person I knew with the surname Bryson, was the vicar of St Mary’s Church, Lower Ince, in the forties. A lovely gentleman.
