THIS IS THE ORIGINAL DOUGLAS BRIDGE. THE COURSE OF THE RIVER WAS DIVERTED IN ORDER TO BUILD WIGAN CENTRAL STATION. YOU CAN STILL SEE A BIT OF THE BRIDGE NEXT TO THE SPIRITUALIST CHURCH IN CROMPTON STREET. THERE WAS MORE OF THE BRIDGE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BEHIND THE RITZ CINEMA, AND WHAT WAS DOUGLAS TERRACE. BUT IT WAS DEMOLISHED TO MAKE WAY FOR THE GRAND ARCADE

That’s really interesting Ron, it shows just how steep the drop down to the Douglas was before the river was diverted and Central Station built.

The old Georgian house that still stands in Millgate ( near to where Pennngtons was). A little girl who lived there drowned in the river I believe, not sure if it was before It was diverted. There's an ornamental stone face that's still in place over the door in her memory. It's fascinating to think how close the river was to the houses in Millgate. I can't imagine it myself! Sometimes when I come out of Debenhams, I walk past the house and look up over the door. I thought something was being done to preserve the house, it looks like work has stopped.
