This bridge was designed so that a horse pulling a barge could cross from the left side towpath on the other side of the bridge to the right side towpath on this side of the bridge without having to be uncoupled from the barge.

That bridge was for many years part of my daily commute to work om a bike from Norley Hall to Dougall Eng Boundary St.It was also my playground in the 40/50s,living nearby gave me the opportunity to watch the boatmen stabling their horses in the Canal Co stables situated just beyond the bridge.
