The Balcarres Arms, close to Christmas.

I like that lamp over the door.

Reminds me of the ever-popular Christmas card-coaching scenes. And although the plants in the window-boxes look crisp and even, the flowers in the baskets don't appear to have sparkled very well - Failed winter-pansies(?) . . . Oh No!

A lovely photo. I too like the lamp. This pub brings memories of my son's first car when he was 17. It was cobbled together....the doors were all different colours and the bonnet too, but it was a Rolls Royce to our Jamie! He very proudly took me out for my dinner to The Balcarres and we had to sit where we could see the car from the window so it wouldn't get stolen, (highly unlikely!). The landlord was leaning on the counter and never looked up from the rugby page of the newspaper when Jamie asked for two chip barms, but just bellowed through to the kitchen, "Mary!! Knock thisel' abeawt a bit.....two chip barms!". Jamie is 42 now but I never pass The Balcarres without smiling to myself! xx

The lamp is very much in keeping with that lovely building... I wonder if it is still there over the door. Doesn't everywhere look much nicer when snow is on the ground!

Only one thing wrong with that pub, and that's Burtonwood Ales.

It is now a Marston's house, Alan.

Was there a pub named the Balcarres, in King Street West, just after what was once, Gee’s School of Dancing?.
