That's another belter . You don't half take some cracking photos DTease.....and no bull.
DTease. Would this be a tow path that carried on to Hawkley Hall?. I may not have spelt the name correctly.
It's quite nice being reminded of snow in all this heat we are having.... Very Chrismassy..
It is the towpath just after the Scotchman's flash heading towards Wigan it is St James church.
Definitely got the same four corner towers, as has St Jame’s Church.
Thanks for that Ozy, your comment is much appreciated.
Albert S, I’m pretty sure that I took this photo on the part of the Canal that branches off from the main Canal near Wigan Pier.
This is looking back towards Wigan.
DTease. Thank you for pointing out the location. Did the tow path continue in the opposite direction towards Hawkley Hall?. When I was based at Newtown, and Hawkley Hall was not built on. There was an explosive store out there in the wilds. It had to be visited twice, during the night.
Albert S, in the other direction it veers off from Poolstock Lane, past Scotsman's Flash, past Hawkley Hall and on, eventually to Leigh.
If the view was toward Wigan, would not the church be on the other side?
It looks to me like the figure is heading south with Scotsman's on his left.
Sorry, I meant the Flash to the left of the church between Poolstock lane and the canal.
DTease is correct. The lock visible in the shot is the last one on the Leigh branch of the Leeds Liverpool canal. The next one in the direction of Leigh being Dover lock at Abram, had it still existed.
DTease is standing with Scotmans flash behind him and to his left . In fact he's standing within yards of the new road bridge that featured on P.A.D recently which in turn follows the old trackbed of the railway line that linked Pemberton with Hindley.
Poet, at the top of this picture the Canal veers to the right and then runs parallel with Poolstock Lane past St James.
Yes, thank you friends, I am reorientated.
to your left is wigan rovers football ground, then the scotsmans flash overflow outlet to the river douglas, then the small flash near westwood nursing home.
The canal at Poolstock on a winters day, but this photo could have been taken last year or 40 years ago. St James church is just visible, I regard that as Wigan's number 2 church after All Saints. There are now two new bridges nearby, across Poolstock Lane and a lower one across the canal. This will be the new road fom the M6/58 at Orrell to the M61 near Bolton. A bigger bridge will have to be built across the main line railway next to Wigan, Ince and Westwood cemeteries.
