My playmates(Graham,David & Trevor) & I went a walk through Standish Park, the hall in background, then onto Mill Dam,John & Giants Hall pits, Beech Hill and back to Standish via Gidlow Washing plant and up the mineral line to home. Out for the afternoon and back before dark.Would 12/14 year old boys be allowed to do that now.? It was freedom to us.

The question is Barrie...would 12/14 yr old boys want to do it today ?

When did the mollycoddling begin I wonder? Certainly up to the early 70s, I and my mates were allowed out till the shadow on the dial had faded.
Is today's society really more dangerous than then or, fuelled by a sensationalist media become more paranoid?
My dad used to say ' if any strange folk bother you lad run like blazes and tell a bobby'.

Great photo Barrie. I doubt they would be allowed but if they would be interested in such innocent fun, More fun to be had on mobile phones and the internet. Btw, if that's Standish Hall behind you, what's the building to the left ?. Would that have been the servants quarters

WN1- According to an 1951 map & the booklet "Standish-80 years of change 1901-1981" by S.Aspinall the building on the left was Crow Orchard which, I presume, was an old farm house set within the trees. When this photo was taken part of the hall had been demolished or removed ( according to another book on Standish part of the hall was dismantled and shipped to the USA and rebuilt!) Helen-if they are allowed to roam now, they will have mobile phones with them so the parents can keep tabs on them Ha ha.I am just glad we, on WW, grew up in the era we did and parents trusted us not to come to harm.
