Hmmm, I'm trying to identify the Shevy Thunderbolt from among this group.
Could that be a young Mick, third from left , the cocky kid leaning nonchalantly across the crossbar of his steed ?.... I have to admit, my eyes aren't what they were,....and this blimmin' Philosan isn't helping much either.
Possibly Wigan Clarion cycling club Ron,who were active in the late 1800s/early 1900s.
The gentleman standing 4th right with the bowler hat and white beard looks very much like James Higson, who was the lodge keeper at Plantation Gates at this time.
In all the tangle of bicycles there is one chap in his plus fours and arm akimbo, holding on to a frame with no wheels - his hand is just under the seat! To my untrained eye that is - I do confess to my eyes playing tricks occasionally. He looks as if he is wearing spectacles anyway...nearer to the left handside of the arch at the front.
Veronica the guy next to him has a tandem, hence it looks like he is just holding a frame
Ahh! I see, reminds me of when we were kids - those who didn't have a bike ran at the sides of those who had one. Thanks Ron.
Hi Ron, would it be ok to repost this on the Friends of Haigh Hall Heritage and Open Access For All Information Page on facebook. I don't know it you are aware of the controversy surrounding the leasing of the hall but this may help. Thanks.
David yes feel free and yes I am well aware of the controversy. I am friends with Peter Fleetwood who keeps me informed of the shenanigans It appears the silence from the council is deafening......
Mick LD
The gentleman in the bowler hat is not James Higson
James died in 1898 He was living at Haigh Foundry Cottages at the time
