This is a view across Whelley and Wigan from Shedfield Bridge on the Canal.
The land in the foreground is the former site of Alexandra Pit in Whelley. This land was open cast mined in the eighties and then re-claimed. St Stephen's Church is in the middle and Wigan Parish Church is on the right.
On the left you can just see part of the huge bank of pink Rhododendron's that lined the Whelley Loop Line. They made a glorious sight at this time of year.

I've always had a liking for 'rhododendrons in full bloom', and especially when they strut their 'mid-purple' flowers in woodland. Beechgrove's recent Episode 5, shows Alastair Maclean up at Nairn as he extends his multi-coloured collection by propagation. And could yon lass in DTease's picture be Carole Baxter - A Kentish lass I believe.
