This is 42631 Stanier Class 4 2-6-4 tank calling at Hindley South on it's way from Wigan Central to Irlam or Manchester Central. This picture was taken by Allan Heyes in July 1964.

When you look at the photo, is the Strangways pub to the left.

The Strangeways pub was to the right at the bottom on the hill on the left

I think that when you look at that picture, you get the impression that you are facing away from Wigan, but the opposite is true, you are actually facing towards Wigan and the Strangeways Pub is actually to the right of that picture, as is the centre of Hingley and Platt Wazz is to the left of the picture.

the embankment in the background is the whelley lop line which had a connection to the GC line both west and east
