Sorry John ,but we did depart from here, there was over 94000 people watching this match .not enough room on the west coast line for all the specials from Wigan and St. Helens.we went to London road manchester ,changed over to electric to Sheffield, went through Nottingham , Peterborough,,arrived at Marylebone ,7 hours later ,cheers eric

Eric, your route is correct except you would never go through Peterborough. You went down the Great Central main line (which is the nearest main line to Wembley Stadium) and would have gone through Woodhead Tunnel to Sheffield then via Nottingham, Leicester, Rugby and Aylesbury to either Neasden or Marylebone. As you say, with most people travelling by train, The West Coast main line and Wembley Central station could not have handled the sheer number of people so the railways used various routes to get the crowds to Wembley.

Thanks for that info Stuart.could have sworn went past London brick co.which is in Peterborough, that must have been on another occasion.I do remember passing through Leicester,as they had lost in the fa cup to spurs the week previous.cheers eric
