...he realized that I wasn't going to accept his offer, he flicked his tail in disgust and paddled off down the canal with his beak in the air ( I think he was hoping for something in the food line really )

Yes, DTease, he probably had been on the mooch for something to eat, and I'm confident that you'd both realised that plumage such as this had been far too pretty to have become ruffled.
