Having seen someone digging in the waste land off Donkey Lane one day, I went along myself a few days later - and here are some of the bottles I dug up from the tip - I also found pottery marmalade jars, ink bottles, etc..
A few years later I saw an excavator go on the land and, after putting a drainage pipe into the brook to effect a crossing, it began to root up trees and generally dig up the area. The story I heard was that there were plans to make a fishing pond in the triangular area between the old Pemberton Loop Line, the brook, and the Springs Branch line. I don't think it went much further though.

I like the two ink? bottles - sandwiched between the three oil? bottles at the front.

Far nicer than the plastic bottles we have these days and better for the environment, plus the big fish wouldn't 'eat' them. The small wider neck bottles would be nice with a few sprigs of flowers on the kitchen window.

Reminds me of when I worked on the foundations of a new stand at Central Park many years ago. We came across hundreds, if not thousands, of stoneware beer bottles with the legend "Milgate Brewery". Apparently, they were rejects because of the mis-spelling and were used as backfill for the original stand. Most of them were broken but I salvaged a couple of intact ones.

Give me plastic bottles any day, so what if they kill a few fish, just think how many bike punctures they save

Mick,that's a ridiculous statement.

'It's not unusual' from Mick..

I used to post comments on this site regularly, whenever I thought I could help with information etc, but got put off from doing so by the likes of people like Mick, who seem to contribute nothing but snide and unpleasant comments.
I think he must be a very unhappy little man.

I think Mick might change his mind about cullet if he should manage to find the seal of one of 'His Lordship's' 18th century shattered wine bottles on the towpath; he'd be fit to burst.

Well said Kath!
Too many people get a kick out of throwing their weight around and upsetting people online.

Have you folks not realised, Mick makes comments like this just to wind people up.

Comment by: Kath on 8th April 2019 at 10:03

Billy Bunter - so being sarcastic and rude to individuals is only a 'wind up'?
It is usually known as bullying.

Kath you shouldn't let anybody put you off - if they do try to put you down it because they can't find anything interesting or original to say!!!

Comment by: Mick on 8th April 2019 at 10:38

I think if some of you lot had as many punchers as me you might change your mind

Comment by: fred foster on 8th April 2019 at 17:23

Punchers? are we talking fisticuffs or bike tyres. Surely the word is PUNCTURES

Comment by: Veronica on 8th April 2019 at 19:51

I thought it was rubber for mending punctures not plastic!
