Wiganers join the crowds for the traditional gatherings at Rivington Pike during the Easter holidays in 1968.

On Good Friday as young teenagers we used to walk from Standish to the Pike and back.

Me too Roy.

It was a common sight at one time to see droves of young people making their way to Rivington on Good Friday from Westhoughton, not so much these days. From a good vantage point you could see columns winding their way to the top of the Pike.

The Bradley/Adlington route was an epic adventure. Reaching the barn was like reaching base camp . The Pigeon Tower like the south col on Everest.

1968...Brill! I still take the kids (33, 32, 27 and 2) to Ashurst Beacon every Good Friday...Even in the pouring rain. :)

I can remember doing this walk from Hindley with school friends a few times in our teens. Mind you we had finished our packed lunches by the time we were at the end of Scot Lane, Aspull !

Hello, Bev. Yes, made me smile and sad at the same time.

No one would go up 'Rivi' wearing a tie these days.

Comment by: Veronica on 8th April 2019 at 15:26

It's a bit like the older men who went on Blackpool beach in their suits and ties Poet. They would even roll their trouser legs up for a paddle ... And wearing their flat caps - bless 'em! We are only a generation away from them.....
