Silcocks also had a place in Ashton, behind the police station, what we used to call the Steam Engine.

I remember my first ride on The Waltzer - sat with my elder brother I was. Mam and Dad told me 'You'll be alright". Aye, 'I was alright', . . . instead of the carriage rotating at the expected pleasing whirl, it was given added impetus from a Ted, which almost 'pulled my neck . . .'. Oh! Lordy, Lordy . . . talk about a wheel within a wheel.

Those 'Teds' gave an extra big push if they could see you were scared. I remember if a few girls were in the same waltzer they would do that - they would show off and hang on at the back just to listen to the screaming! Happy days!

Big deck was popular on the waltzers
