Looks a old shop name as been uncovered

Comment by: Ian on 31st March 2019 at 13:01

Looks like King Street to me.
Mesnes Street is more level.

Definitely King Street, went for a job interview there

Comment by: dave johnson on 31st March 2019 at 14:19

Just checked it was 8/10 King St. Thought it may have been Mesnes St myself at first glimpse.

Comment by: DerekB on 31st March 2019 at 14:27

Surely, this is King St. Can't see how the road marking showing a right turn would have applied in Mesnes St in 1966. It seems to indicate that this was a one way street.

I've just looked on the search box..it's definitely King Street.

I remember Helen Rowe's shop but couldn't have said where it was. The fascia over the top was a pale yellow with black writing.

Irene,Helen Rowes shop was also facing the L&Y railway station..I know she was there in the 50's because I used to go there..also my Aunt married Helens Brother.

Maureen, that may be where I remember it from. I recognise the shop like it was yesterday but can't place it in a particular location. I wish those shops were back and Wigan was how we knew it in our youth. xxxxx

I wonder if Helen Rowe's shop in Wallgate was the one that sold dresses. A girl who lived a few doors from me in John St went there for her first grown- up dress. She was a few years older than me and I remember her mother telling me they had been to Helen Rowe's for what you would call a 'prom dress' these days. It was a yellow, frothy net number! Would that be right Maureen? It looks to be blouses and stockings in the window on the photo - it's not a shop I went in.

Helen Rowe's shop was the one I would invariably hear that my mother had visited when she went to town, she also liked Helen herself who must have been an engaging personality.

Comment by: A.W. on 1st April 2019 at 09:20

Helen Rowe did have a shop opposite Wallgate Station, closed about 15-20 years ago, think there's a cafe in the same place now.

Yes Veronica, she did sell dresses but I seemed to buy nothing but blouses there, never a dress..her blouses were lovely, really pretty cotton blouses,my Mam would look in the window and drag me in,saying "This will suit you love"..when I look back I suppose I was spoilt as they say.
And yes Irene I'd give anything to have all the old shops back, but you know what they say "It's progress" but square shaped box like buildings will never look like progress to me...if the truth is known,we don't want to let go of our youth.

The Kingston saloon was up some stairs some where about this point ,Barry Jackson started here in 1964.shaved in partings for the mods was a popular request

Researching King Street - It looks like Ellen Rowe shop changed name from Ellen Rowe to Helen Rowe sometime in the 1960's. I wasn't aware of the shop in Wallgate. One of my records suggest that Ellen Rowe may have had a shop on the other side of King Street at one point ? Number 11 - this could be an mis type ? Any information on the shop / business would be appreciated.

My first job was for Mr. GIBSON. in Rodney House King Street in 1975. He sold 8 to 10 to Abbey National before that.
