H.L. Gorners garage (Rootes Group) was actually on Nicol Road.

You are probably right Garry. When I found this picture in the archives there was no information with it and I just remember Gorners on Wigan Road.I remember going to do a promotion picture for a celebrity charity golf match there in the 1990s I think and Liverpool comedian Stan Boardman was there. I took a few pictures of him with golf clubs and then he disappeared. I looked outside and he was in the middle of Wigan Road and before I could get my camera set he put a golf ball down on the road and whacked it towards Ashton. I regret not getting the picture.

I'm definitely right Frank.
Cindy, they were indeed Mercedes dealer but many years later than this date.

I know Gorners were Rootes/Chrysler dealers in 1979, I think they went over to Mercedes a couple of years later.

Both my Mum and Dad worked for (old) Horace Gorner for many years. They were a lovely family.

Anyone remember Garner's Garage that was there before this one, LOL--just a big wooden shed with one petrel pump

Dougie: you need to remember how to spell!

Gorners was a Rootes dealer in the 1960s, with Hillman, Singer, Sunbeam and Humber cars and Commer vans, before I as born, as I remember it being a Mercedes dealer in the 1980s.In this picture there is a Mini, and also a Hillman Imp just visible behind the petrol pumps. In 1966 the Hunter replaced the Super Minx.

in the 90's it would have been on Wigan Rd as well ! after the houses and The Star Inn (the 2 chimleys on the right) were demolished

Comment by: John59 on 18th January 2019 at 13:39

... of course, we should be talking of Nichol Lane :-) (not Nicol Road)

Comment by: WILLY WACKUM on 18th January 2019 at 13:56

John what is a chimley? Is it something like a chimney?
