Photograph taken in the early 1900's This building stood on the corner of the Market Place and the Wiend. The building was later occupied by Martins Bank and more recently a Betting Office, which has now closed. The man on the right of the photograph is stood outside of the CROSS KEYS HOTEL. The man on the left, is what we called a Policeman, again someone not seen in the Market Place for a long time.

And what did this Policeman do Ron? Nowadays it seems they sit in their cars and lock the door when danger threatens.

Fascinating photo. I bet Albert will be interested in this, with the policeman who cuts a very proud and formidable presence. Thanks for posting, Ron.

In those days Irene, a much more disciplined orgaization, with very severe conditions of service, and very little remuneration.

I can imagine that, Albert.

The man on the right, waiting for the alehouse to open. A typical scene on a Sunday lunchtime in Wigan. Funny enough, nowts changed: they still wait for the alehouses to open, 100 years on.

And to think, joy of joys, we can still walk over the same cobbles and flagstones of the Wiend and stand on the same spot as that Wigan Bobby and marvel at what is still left.

The Furniture shop must have done good business considering the well worn steps at the front of the shop. What a sight to behold it must have been inside there. No designer layout with everything matching but a scene of 'higgledy - piggledy' solid Victorian furniture for the discerning buyer? Notice the horse droppings too!

Much like the Fish on Saturdays.

The old chap on the right looks far to straight to be seen hanging around the fish.
