Taken in 1983. There were lots of boats in the canal basin. I think it was some sort of boat rally.

Good photo Arthur, Gordon Ford's was rebuilt soon after this photo was taken and the terminal building just visible on the right of the photo was in the course of extensive rebuilding for the Wigan Pier project.

It would have been September 1983, Arthur. The Inland Waterways Association held their rally at Wigan. Over 400 boats attended.

In 1983 Wigan Pier was a derelict eyesore, before the site was restored to be a major tourist attraction culminating with the visit of the Queen in 1986. Gordon Ford car dealers is across the road, and nearby were the two bus depots, Ribble, and Greater Manchester Transport in Pottery Road.
