Soon to change dramatically as the link road between Pottery Road and Ormskirk Road was built. That happened 20011/12 - officially opened March 2013.
This historic pre-stressed concrete bridge is post-war, and at least two rebuilds of the original 1847 bridge occurred in the meantime. I'd heard that the original viaduct, perhaps only there whilst the line was being constructed, was a wooden trestle bridge - which would have resembled a seaside pier... perhaps the original Wigan Pier....

It looks idyllic here, far from the chaos of the Saddle junction. And then, more chaos as it becomes part of it. To be honest, the flow of traffic has improved using the bridge, but what is currently going just under the bridge and to the left is like something out of Monty Python. Like the bloody 'new' bus station, the work goes on and on and on and on...

Progress never dies, it lives and breathes and flies ,
Like a chosen writers pen , it discards the the times of when ,
As you and me we hold , it’s market is packed up , gone and sold ,
gone to another place , knocked down , new and replaced .
New windows , new doors , my choice , no , I think .. yours ..
