It was the 50th anniversary of the "15 guinea special" last weekend. Pictured at Parkside Junction where it stopped by the memorial to William Huskisson, President of the Board of Trade who was knocked down by the "Rocket" locomotive and subsequently died of his injuries. I would guess that there are quite a few Wiganers in the photo. (4th August 1968).

I didn't go. Steam had ceased on the Pemberton Loop by then and there was nothing of real interest left. As for the '15 guineas', that was about five weeks wages for a first year apprentice. No thanks! I chose too remember B1 Oribi coming up the Orrell bank in April 1965...That was it for me.

Note the distinctive water tower in the background. The M6 was built nearby - so, until it was sadly demolished, it was my home marker for the nearby Haydock roundabout from where the East Lancs would take me home to Kirkby.

On the 11th August 1968, steam traction finished as motive power for BR. A sad day for many. Almost 50 years ago.

Apparently, the last train on the Pemberton Loop was the 'Cities' special on June 23rd 1968, my 14th birthday...actually.
