DTease: Is this the club that country music took off in a big way, and they had neon lights around it.

It reminds me of the American Diners in New England - where you get massive helpings! All the family go out to eat together - I don't think they cook at home!

I thought that was Nashville John G.

John G, I think the only time the Labour Club had lights around it was when the Gas Board dug the Car Park up by mistake looking for a leak and I reckon Country Music wouldn't have been tolerated as it would have interrupted the Bingo.

I don't know about American Diner Veronica, it was more a case of

Veronica: I'am pretty sure all they served here was pies..

D'you mean to tell me they never served Buffalo Wings? I'm sure they did some line dancing though.....and I bet a few cowboys went in there!

Sorry DTease not only is it the wrong club but wrong area, the club I was thinking of was in Abram, I used to go past it on my way to Work.
plus when I was younger had a few good nights on the Country music scene.

Poet: I've seen Dolly Parton of the North at southport, nice little singer, I wanted to see her in the evening venue but apparently she only works nine till five. Did you know that girls not seen her own feet for over twenty years.

I've often wondered how she eats her soup John G.

Not a nice photo this time. It is sorrowful to see the club degenerate, to what it has become through changing times. My dad was treasurer of the Aspull Labour Club for many many years, starting in Harold St and then as you see on Haigh Rd. The Committee worked very hard scrounging the deposit and mortgaging to have the Club built, they succeeded, and thousands of people enjoyed themselves most nights per week, every week of the year. Lots of comments so far have not been very complimentary, but I wish I could go back to one of those nights and to see my dad with a wide smile on his face looking at the crowded Club Room. Thinking "Money in the bank". unfortunately not to be.

Ken R, I think the comments have been made with more affection than malice. When it was the Labour Club there is no doubt that it was very popular but. has you say times change and by the time the Co-op took over and turned it into a shop it was no longer viable as a club.

Ken R: After reading your post I felt that I needed to write something because you have a personal affiliation to the club, i e ( your father) I for one can be guilty of for getting such feelings because my attitude in life is to look for humor and inject fun, not at but with most Wigan people. Some times I don't succeed and unintentionally insult a good person, if I have done that to you please forgive my ignorance, but time moves on Ken and clubs and pubs appear to be fading away, anyway chin up, always try to look on the bright side of life.

I agree John G with your sentiments. I hope Ken is not offended by my comment either. I enjoyed my time in New England and the first Diner I went in just looked like Aspull Club from the outside ... Just a bit of fun and I have also visited that club some years ago- for the life of me I can't remember what it was for! x

Is this the place Trevor Edmundson now owns?

Comments by Ken R, 9th July 2018
Thanks all for your kind remarks. There is a lot of nostalgia racing through the bloodstream and I realize the times have changed. Did any of you hear about the hold up at gun point. Perhaps for another day ho ho ho.

Comments by DTease, 9th July 2018
Carl, Trevor Edmundson did own it but it now belongs to the Co-op who turned it into a shop.
