Bartons the bottlers from Stubshaw Cross delivering drinks to the shop.
Great photo.
I lived just off Ormskirk Road over 50 years ago and for the life of me, I can't place it's location.. Can anyone give me some help?
It's next door to the petrol station in Pemberton.
JM...It is on Ormskirk Road, If you went to the left of the
picture for 100 yards/Metres, you would be at the traffic lights, straight on for Wigan, turn right for Enfield Street
or turn left for Norley Hall Avenue. For many years, it was
run by Gerard Kelly. Its now a Premier store.
I have stood many hours at the front of that shop. It was the meeting place for our gang<g> I can't visualise it ever being on light summer nights!!! all I can remember is it being dark, cold, winter, nights.
your right joe its now a premier one shop groceries and off door licence
the chap standing at the side of the wagon looks like Tommy Woodward doing the delivery for Bartons,
In what years did this become an off licence, i always remember the off licence being on the corner of Enfield St
across from Norley Hall, cant imagine 2 so close.
j.a.g. It's always been an Off License as far as I know. It was definitely an Off License in the 1950's. There was also an Off License, as you say, on the corner of Enfield street and Ormskirk Road
This was taken about 1980. I can't say how long it operated as an off license but my brother Derek says they used to sell beer through the pumps back in the days and remembers them being taken out and seeing all the brass fittings lying in the back garden.
This is now a premeir shop owned by a lad called danny, hes indian/bolton chap and a man i call my friend ...he speaks better wigan ese than i do lol
