Whilst this was primarily a photo of my dog, the photo shows interesting background details albeit not very clearly. Sammy's Flood, the sewer pipe which ran alongside and the slag heaps beyond. A view now very much changed. The dog stands on the track from the side of St. Nat's Church, past the old farmyard and over the old mineral railway line. Just off the photo to the left was the boarded fence of the Platt Bridge Bowling Green Club and then down to the right the "Cocky Brook" and thence under the railway to Bickershaw, etc.
The photo dates from 1953 and was taken with my first camera, a Coronet, obtained from Mr. Gregory, the Chemist on the opposite corner from St. Peter's Church, Hindley.

Lovely photo and obviously a much-loved dog! Were the slag heaps behind Hindley Grammar School or nearer than that?

Arthur: A 'chumly' image, and I hazard a guess that the star of the show was a Jack Russell terrier.

Phillip, thanks for your comment, It's a long story as to how acquired the dog, lrt's just say it involved meithering, pestering and sulking!!
Irene, the smaller slag heap to the left was immediately behind Leyland Park so, yes, near the Grammar School.

So your persistence paid off, Arthur, and you both became the best of chums. Well done, sir.

Walked past this exact spot many times, also walking on the sewer pipe.At the bottom of this path you went under the railway bridge towards the Raft lodge and the G C pond.We also called the rucks Jack Harts which were from the Grange pits. The area is now the Low Hall Nature Reserve but to many people it will always be Sammies.

It's still Sammy's Flood for me,I heard it got the name from something that happened to a farmer, but I don't know what,Hindley South was very close by,and I can remember going to Irlam steel works with my Grandad,I would have been about 6,and there were some men in green uniforms who spoke funny,I later found out they were Italian POWs.

thanks for this, it's really interesting. seeing Sammy's Flood from where (roughly) my house has stood since 1988 is fascinating
