Here is the last of the flats being demolished. It had to be taken down piece by piece because of the asbestos content. It must be over 20 years ago

What were the names of the three tower blocks in Worsley Mesnes?

Comment by: steve on 2nd March 2018 at 03:27

Dryden house,Thackeray house, Masefield house.

Dryden House, Thackeray House and Masefield House. They were built in the mid 1960s and demolished storey by storey in 1991.

Comment by: David Hurst on 2nd March 2018 at 08:39

The blocks were Masefield, Dryden and Thackery Houses.

I think one was Thackery House as my brother and wife lived in that one for 12 months until their new house was built. I remember visiting in 1970 and thinking how nice it was inside.

Today's quiz is which is the odd one out?

Comment by: John D on 2nd March 2018 at 13:25

Dryden and Masefield were both named John. Thackeray was a William.

I had foolishly overlooked their Christian names John D so of course you're right but it wasn't the answer l had in mind. Regards

Comment by: John D on 2nd March 2018 at 20:46

OK Poet, I'll try again. Thackeray was never the Poet Laureate. The other two were.

Comment by: tuddy on 2nd March 2018 at 21:00

Why were they demolished after only twenty odd years, but the flats in Scholes were built at the same time and are still standing?

Comment by: Poet on 2nd March 2018 at 21:28

That was what the answer I had in mind John. My apologies for setting the worst pub quiz question ever.

Comment by: John D on 2nd March 2018 at 22:17

No apology necessary Poet. We can now Makepeace. That's probably the worst pun you've ever heard.

John D I hope that's 'Donne' and dusted with the Dead Poet's Society!

I had a mate that lived on the 2nd floor but that's another storey.

The Worsley Mesnes flats were demolished in 1991, but could not be blown up as there were houses nearby. Dryden House was the first to go, then Thackeray House, while work was delayed on the third, Masefield House because of stubborn tennant Fred Bourne who refused to leave.
