Lovely photo of Hindley of the 1950's.In those days and up to the 1980's it had a decent variety of shops and a thriving Friday market.A mixture of fast food eateries and nail bars now.

I wish it was still like that. I loved Hindley Woolworth's with its wooden floor. Peter and I went in Woolworths in Ludlow some tears ago and it was JUST like Hindley, art-deco door-handles, wooden floors and all. I felt I had gone back in time. x

A big change today Hindley Market st, then full of well respected shops and people, now full of cheap shops selling junk and junk food outlets. Ince Bar was lovely years ago too.

That's the Hindley from my childhood. A lovely, thriving place with a bustling market, atmospheric shops and a great library! A far remove from the way the town is today.

Not only Hindley Garry, but all over Wigan.

My grandmother, Mary Ellen Beesley nee Roper was born on Market street, number 100 somewhere near the Library. I would love an old photo of Market Street to appear on WW. She was born at the end of the 188o's, if anyone has one that shows the section of Market Street near the library around this time I would love to see it.

Wigwann , last property in row ,right on corner of Cross Street ( Barnes-Hazel Opticians )is 102 .... then library .... then Four Seasons florist which is 98 . No 100 must have been demolished to make way for library

Thanks Stemul, however I thought the library was built before my grandmother's birth, sometime in the 1870's.This would seem mean the houses were still standing in 1888 or Market Street was re- numbered to accomodate the library

Before it became Market Street, it was known as Mill Lane, maybe it was re-numbered at the time. ??

Thanks for the info Steve. My grandmother was born in 1888 two years after the library was opened and it states on her birth cert at no. 100. Would the houses be numbered after the library, starting with 100? Or does anyone know where I find a 1890 street map? Mny thanks

No 100, 104 or 106 from 1881 Hindley Directory.

This gets more and more confusing! I wonder if the registrar took down the address incorrectly at the time of her birth or the family gave misinformation. However many thanks Roger, I have been advised to try census records next to see if that will help solve the problem.

It's quite possible that there was a 100, 104 and 106, these could have been residential houses, not businesses.

Please could any one help im looking for the name of the solicitors that was at 103 market street 37 years ago.
