Brilliant photo ! On this website under Hindley Directory for 1925, 93, Castle Hill Road is occupied by Elijah Beardsworth, Hair and Shaving saloon, also by Thomas William Winstanley, victualler, of the Lord Nelson Inn.Reminds me of the old pubs of Ireland that have a shop or even an undertakers at the front.

Comment by: DTease on 28th January 2018 at 20:14

I can see him in my mind's eye Poet, doing "The Dying Swan" wearing his Flat Cap and his "pointy" Clogs.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th January 2018 at 20:59

The faces of those two lads look so modern as if they are in costume acting in a play!

Comment by: Philip Gormley. on 28th January 2018 at 21:59

I agree with you Veronica. My first impressions of the photo were that not only did the two lads look happy, but the rest of the crew also looked contented. Pity about the 'dog' in the centre, fighting for its head.

They look like they have escaped from the set of 'The Muppets'!

winnie you're spot on with John Murphy - the 1911 Census says he was from of Liverpool and landlord Castle Tavern, Castle Hill. It appears to have been at 111 Castle Hill and by 1925 was a house.

The pub I knew as The Castle in the 1970s and used to play pool in the cellar was demolished and is now Acorn Care Home, on the corner of Castle Hill and Lancaster Rd.

The man bottom left is my Uncles Grandfather John Townsend. He was a Coal miner and on the Rescue Team. His son is still alive, age 97 and has identified him on here. Fantastic photo!
