Used to be the children's library on the ground floor and the museum upstairs, one of the standard stopping off places after going to the baths! Happy Days!

Of the five last photographs depicted, are any of the buildings, or featured locations left?, or are they all now, what once was?.

Albert,
Our forward thinking council thought they should be demolished.

Comment by: DerekB on 30th November 2017 at 15:39

For once our council was right, but there is still way to go around Wigan and district in demolishing similar same vintage hideous Victorian/Edwardian buildings.

I went regularly on a Saturday morning to The Powell Children's Library, and you spoke in whispers in the libraries in those days!

The college and the No1 pier buildings are still there, but the old museum and children's library is long gone.

DerekB. I cannot understand your reasoning, Wigan Council have a long history of demolishing perfectly decent old buildings and replacing them with monstrosities and white elephants. Look at the galleries, open less than 30 years and now redundant. the old Market Hall was there for well over 100 years and thriving even when it was demolished.

A.W. it's a case of each to his own and I totally respect your preferences. I hate the sight of Edwardian/Victorian architecture but totally agree that there are modern/relatively modern in buildings in and around the town, such as Brocol House, which are equally hideous.

Can anyone cite me an example of a post Edwardian building anywhere in the town that is loved or admired?

Poet,
The old reference library now the Museum of Wigan Life at the bottom of Library St.

Comment by: Poet on 3rd December 2017 at 16:52

I don't think that qualifies as post Edwardian Bewley.
