Regarding the diesel locomotive and train seen above, some
readers may be confused. As stated above, the train is on the "UP FAST LINE", despite it about to set off "DOWN" South, probably to London Euston. In Railway parlance, all
trains heading to the capital,travel "UP" to London. A train
departing London Kings Cross bound for Edinburgh travels
"DOWN" as far as Berwick Upon Tweed, and once over the border, and into Scotland, the train travels "UP" to Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. Strange, but true.

Ah, but how do you understand the assignment of 'UP', and 'DOWN' labels on the lines that run East-West, such as the Transpennine routes? They seem to simply reflect the view of the company which first owned the routes.
