Think this is the 60s

Comment by: Brian on 26th November 2017 at 20:49

Could be right Eric. I guessed early 80s as its part of a large collection which has a date of 1980-82.

John McCurdy Hall as it was known when it was built in the early 50's. As a pupil of Thomas Linacre School next door i watched it being built. The Queen opened it in 1954.

Is this the complex where the colliery shaft winding wheel is displayed?.

Comment by: Maurice on 27th November 2017 at 17:08

I went there from 1961 to 1963 on a mining course,we still had to attend the old mining college, now the Town Hall for some lessons though.

I also had that experience, Maurice.

One small problem, they had not timetabled to accommodate the time taken to walk from Library Street to Parson's Walk.

We managed if the preceding lecture ended promptly. All too often though it would fail to so do, and overrun, and should heavy traffic also slow down our crossing of Market Place, then we realised all is lost, and we would be crashing into the middle of the subsequent lecture that we should have attended. So on such occasions, we would end up in one of the conveniently located pubs.

I went to Wigan tech from 1965-69 Then to the town hall for engineering exam's.

Seems like you guys were looking for any excuse to get to the pubs. I did that same route "sans pubs" a few years before you.

I didn't have that problem AP,my stint in Library St. was the evening one,but it was a very long day,9am to 9pm,I had a nice surprise though, one of my teachers was the same one who was a teacher at Leigh Junior Tech when I was 13,Mr Redfearn.

I remember when that wall was much higher and cows grazed on the other side!!

Comment by: tuddy on 28th November 2017 at 20:12

Yes Albert, this is the one with the winding wheel, but It's been moved round the corner into New Market Street.

Comment by: Albert. on 30th November 2017 at 10:46

Thank you, Tuddy.

I would say that photo was taken in the 1960's probably early 1960's because the Sports Hall was built on that corner and that was up well before 1970

Comment by: Garry on 30th November 2017 at 21:30

Looking at the bit if car, I'd say 1960s early 1970s.

Comment by: Alison on 2nd December 2017 at 11:21

My dad who took the picture only moved to Wigan in 1966 so it is likely to only have been after that.

I remember pile driving in the area in front of the main entrance, that was 1968 or 1969 so taken before then.

Comment by: Peter on 24th December 2021 at 20:58

Just seen my own comment above re pile driving. I think I should have said the photo would have been taken AFTER 68/69.
