Another pic loaned by Irene Stone.
Close examination will reveal the stone table under the canopy - and that the plaque commemorating the gift of the site of Spite Row by James Ainscough, which now sits in the central column in the wall, was not yet in place. It was inserted on his death in 1937.
Note Mick's dad's bike leant against the Peace Gate...

David, Great to see the photographs of the Market Square in the 1930's. I have a copy of "Standish-Eighty Years of Change (1901-1981)" by S.Aspinall. There are 3 photographs similar to the ones posted here but dated 1900/01. The stocks are not shown by the cross nor is the canopy but the iron railings are around the stone table. Incidentally, according to the text this was the fish well where people washed their fish and before that it was for drinking water for the village. The shelter was built over it in 1930, and during the 2nd World War apparently, a US army vehicle reversed into the well structure and demolished it.Does anyone know when the stocks were place in front of the cross? I'm sure they were they in the 50's/60's as I was growing up.

Barrie, they definitely were there in the late 40's.

Can't help feeling that if the stone sett's were put back in place ( or uncovered ) it would add a nice ambiance to the area and slow the traffic down
