Taken on the car park of Garswood labour club, c.1990
On the extreme left is Bill Lawton, a fairly well known homing pigeon enthusiast. Moving to the right we have Harry Heaton, Jack Heaton, then Jimmy Johnson. The young girl at the front being Jack's granddaughter Kerry. Jimmy Johnson worked at the Quaker pit, and was treasurer at the labour club for quite a considerable time. Among Bill Lawton's considerable claims to fame was the winning of the prestigious ' Wigan two bird ' race, a notable feat among the pigeon racing fraternity evidently. I would hasten to add at this juncture, that I personally have little interest in, or knowledge of pigeons, other than their newly born are called ' squabs ' apparently. Of the individuals captured in this shot, only the young girl remains.

Good photo my quearie is to ask about Jack Heaton if i have the photo correctly which is Jimmy Johnson ? and does or did he ever remember my dad Thomas Winstanley ( THOM) Also my brother worked at Quaker House his name was WILFRED Winstanley, plus does he recall a BOB Witherington he did a spell at that pit. Both my dad and brother Wilf used to go to PARBOLD to the manager and owner DONALD ANDERTON on Saturday morning doing his garden work for him . BOB witherington's parents lived ???SIMM'S LANE RD?? i think that was the road's name it was thro the crossroad's at bottom of quaker house pit ! Hiya Dave, Jack lived in Crooke, and spent the bulk of his working life driving tippers for Finch's at Appley Bridge, but he did spend the last years of his driving career at Berry's in Upholland. He died in February 2004, aged 65.

Alan, Jimmy Johnson is the chap on the extreme right. I don't know how long he did at the Quaker pit, or the exact nature of his responsibilities while he worked there, but I do know that in the 80's, he drove the loading shovel and loaded coal onto road wagons. His brother Tommy also worked there and no doubt he would have known your father and brother. Tommy's still knocking about, he lives in north Ashton and I still see him occasionally. There's another lad called Ged who comments on here from time to time. He's local to the area and I daresay he would no doubt have known the people that you mention.

Cheers. Ozy.

Ozymandias, Thank you very kindly for your reply ,i have been trying to remember when my father /brother worked at Quaker House. It must have been from 1952 until he had to stop because of the dreaded ( Pneumoconiosis ) in 1969. My brother left some time in the early 1970's he went to work for JEFFERSON SMURFITT'S AT LANDGATE UNTIL IT CAUGHT FIRE,did a spell at the new works at SUTTON ( st.helens) then got on at REEDS CORRUGATED CASES ,GOOSE GREEN ,UNTIL HE RETIRED ON Health issue's just before his 65th. As i said my father died 1974 brother 2015 died , i think you will recall the payments miner's got for that horrible disease ,Well even unto this day it still rankles me my dad did not get one brass farthing! After all our efforts with our M.P. andy (pandy) burnham we were finally told that because he had not been employed by an N.C.B. Colliery he was not entitled to any money, for at the qualifing period ( 1950--1954 he was working at QUAKER HOUSE a private mine . This after starting work at BLUNDELL'S AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 12 TENDING TO PIT PONIES ,ALL HIS LIFE ,100% PIT DISEASE HE GOT SWEET F.A. SAME FOR OUR MOTHER SWEET F.A. AS you can gather i am still very angry today and will be so until it's my time >>. Again thanks for the chat i have enjoyed it tremendously bye!

i,d like to remind alan that the miners got a pittance compared to the other nationalised industries in payments & 2 of our workmates has just passed away & both in their 50s.
