Market Street and the Market Hall. you can see where the Market Street entrance to Commercial Yard was, next to Latimer's.

Some great buildings now gone...Thank you, Successive Wigan Councils, for ruining our town...

When were the houses on Bridgeman Terrace built?

Comment by: Philip Gormley. on 21st September 2017 at 08:14

DTease: You're back on terra firma, hurrah! Wikipedia has it down as 1876.

Aerial view?
Not an aerial in sight.
Not a Sky dish, not a pie dish...

Thanks for that Philip, Rylands Mill was built in 1864 so this photo must have been taken between these two dates.

Wigan didn't really look a lot different till the early 70's, it was downhill all the way after that!

Comment by: RON HUNT on 21st September 2017 at 16:11

The Market Hall was opened in 1877 so i'ts obviously after that.

Rushton's warehouse (later the gas showrooms) can be seen on New Market St, so that dates the photo after 1905.

If the photograph was taken from an aeroplane, it would definitely be after 1903. The Wright brothers made their first flight. It may have been taken from a balloon. I can't think of any buildings tall enough to take the photograph from.

Albert never heard of the Parish Church<g>

Comment by: Tony on 22nd September 2017 at 16:52

Definitely taken from parish church tower.
Have a look at this pic - covers more or less the same area 100 years later . . .

Yes Willy/Tony. I have seen the photograph you have referred to. I wouldn't have thought that the church tower was that tall, surprising.

The first photographic image was taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826, so I ' suspect' ' this photograph may have been taken sometime between then and now.

Comment by: Philip Gormley. on 22nd September 2017 at 23:25

There's nothing like being a first, Ozy, so I guess Monsieur Niepce's name would have been 'plastered' all across Europe.

So when was Bridgeman Terrace built then ?

Comment by: Philip Cunliffe on 23rd September 2017 at 07:23

There is tall "aerial" on the left hand skyline. Very much doubt if it is. It could be a blemish. Any suggestions ?

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 23rd September 2017 at 17:52

Of all the properties along the entire length of Bridgeman Terrace DTease, there appears to be only one that bears a record of the date that the property was built. This is at No 1 Bridgeman Terrace. The date stone on the front of this building reads ' Park View House 1879 '. The only other building in the immediate vicinity which bears a date being the dental practice directly opposite in Mesnes St. which states that it was built in 1894. Best that I can do I'm afraid.

Regards. Ozy.
