You can see the little church that was on the opposite side of the old fire station.

Add a few matchstick men and women and this could be a Lowry Painting.

The building with all of those windows, is it the swimming pool?.

The single story building to the lower left is where they lined up to get paid. I remember waiting with my dad there.

Albert, Yes,the building with lots of windows is the
"New Baths" at the bottom of Library Street, demolished
a few years ago to make way for the "New Baths".
The 2 Ford Anglia vans belong to North Western Gas Board,
and I think the picture is late 1960s.

I think the photo must be early 1970s or later, as the 'new' police station in Harrogate St can be seen on the right hand edge - the white building, with narrow vertical windows. This was only built 1972/73.

Those new baths was positioned where the Pavilion Cinema had previously been.

What was the name of the sreet that the old fire station was in.

Comment by: Albert. on 23rd August 2017 at 19:38

Ed. It was still part of Chapel Lane.

Having looked a bit closer at the 2 Gas Board vans in the
picture,I now think that they are Mk1 Ford Escort vans.

All this in the days when it was possible to walk to work because there was so much work about - how handy was that! My dad worked at the gas works over 40 yrs from leaving the Army. I worked at a sewing factory on Darlington St for a while and went home for my dinner. It was the same for many people I expect.

i think those vans are more austin than escort

Comment by: Ray on 28th August 2017 at 10:40

The vans are Ford Escort, Based on the first Ford Escort
cars, introduced in late 1067. Mr Baker Boy, which model
of Austin van do you think they are ?
