It is items like this, which thanks to wiganworld are available for everyone to see. As the old advert said
"often imitated never bettered"
This and the photo are a wonderful find! Now we at Wiganworld know "the rest of the story".
..Thanks go to Graham and (belatedly, to Lord Kitchener!)
I have also seen the letter on display. Worse fate awaited the Anzac horses who were killed on the battlefields before repatriation of soldiers back to Australia and New Zealand.I understand this was done to prevent transmission of infection back to the Antipodes.
Aditionally there is a very moving memorial near Park Lane London to all the animals who served, well worth a look if visiting the capital. I know one lady who takes a wreath there each Armistice Weekend to to honour these overlooked combatants
Yes Ellen it is a heart warming story & I am really pleased we got a happy ending !
God love every one of them...beautiful creatures.
For Helen of Troy, I think of you often, when walking my dog, who is fascinated by a lovely donkey in one of the fields we pass. He is a beautiful animal, with a lovely creamy beige coat and large ears("like errant wings")! He lives on a farm with cows and goats.
Ellen what a lovely thing to say !
We were down among the donkeys in Sidmouth, Devon a few weeks ago to meet our adopted donkey Gareth, he is very sweet.
My Great Grandfather Henry Surguy was Lord Kitcheners personal servant and was drowned with him when the ship H.M.S. Hampshire was sunk at Marwick Head in Scotland. Bodies never found.
