I can just about remember the final days of steam on British Railways and at the time me and my brother hated steam engines, we preferred diesel loco's and the reason was that if the train we were travelling on, was hauled by a steam engine and this was mainly on the North Wales line, travelling between Warrington and Prestatyn, then the steam engine would look like the one in the picture, that is dirty, filthy, battered, dented, smelly and basically knackered.
A diesel loco on the other hand, would have been shiny, new, clean, smoother and probably faster, this would have been circa 1968 in the final days of steam, but contrast that from now, when the preserved steam locos are magnificent beasts and very popular with a lot of people.
