I took this photo a month ago when I visited Standish and also parts of Wigan.
The building has changed in 55 years and is the bend still as dangerous?

Comment by: Howard P on 30th March 2017 at 18:26

I suspect this is a recent photo.

Comment by: Phil on 30th March 2017 at 19:19

Howard, I suspect your suspicions are correct. The clue is in the sub-heading where Barrie mentions he took the photo a month ago. but I suppose recent is all relative really.

Comment by: Garry on 30th March 2017 at 21:31

It all depends who is behind the wheel, Phil. You drive to the road conditions ie slow down on bends.

Comment by: Phil on 31st March 2017 at 00:39

Sorry Garry I'm not sure what you are responding to there. I made no reference to speed or driving in my comment.

Comment by: DTease on 31st March 2017 at 09:33

Is it me or have I landed on a different planet?

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 31st March 2017 at 13:40

Yeah, planet Tinytodger DTease, where intelligent life is rumoured to exist, but as yet hasn't actually been discovered.

Comment by: Loz on 31st March 2017 at 17:14

Garry's comment is in reply to Barrie, who asks if the bend is still dangerous.

Comment by: Ken R on 31st March 2017 at 17:38

Okay, now that we have sorted out the curves and speeds, back to the original question. What was the pub and smithy in 1962 ???

Comment by: Phil on 31st March 2017 at 17:40

Loz, if Garry is responding to Barrie why did he refer to me in his comment?

Comment by: DTease on 31st March 2017 at 17:57

Thanks for that Loz, for a minute there I thought I was going to need the electric shock treatment again. Frightening!

Comment by: Garry on 31st March 2017 at 19:19

Loz spot on!

Comment by: Howard P on 31st March 2017 at 19:22

I suspect Garry meant Barrie and not Phil. It's an easy one to work out.

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 31st March 2017 at 20:43

Would I be correct in thinking that the word ' suspect ' would be your chosen word of the month Howard? It's just that you appear to be using the word quite frequently of late. There are other words in the dictionary you know that convey the same meaning......but I'm forgetting, you don't actually possess a dictionary do you?...as is evident from your previous posts. Still, all the best my friend. Love and kisses.

Regards. Ozy.

Comment by: Julie on 31st March 2017 at 21:15

I am also suspecting Ozy you are adopting the position of Sherlock Holmes of the dictionary AND how it should or should not be expressed. Confidence is good, education is better, arrogance is worse , courtesy is respect . We all have our own, think about it!

Comment by: DTease on 31st March 2017 at 22:51

Garry meant Barrie. Barrie agrees with Phil. Howard P is a suspect. Julie is taking the position of Sherlock Holmes and Ozy is having trouble with his todger.
Being sober doesn't agree with me. I'm much happier in my own world of boozy befuddlement. Maybe all this would make sense there.

Comment by: Veronica on 31st March 2017 at 23:14

Please carry on it's the best laugh I've had in ages even if it's bewildering!
I 'suspect' Garry has been at the sherry again!

Comment by: GW. on 1st April 2017 at 07:26

Ah' It's April fools day. Now this all makes sense.

Comment by: Barrie on 1st April 2017 at 09:54

Thanks guys for the best laugh I have had for a few days. I never thought that my question would raise such a debate.!!!! Growing up in Standish in the 1950's early '60's trying to get out of Moss Grove in a vehicle or crossing the road to Tom Robinson's or Annie Park's shop was at times a nightmare.
Father had a problem getting the car into or out of the garage at times due to traffic not slowing for the bend.
Up until 1954/55, Almonds employed a blacksmith to shoe the horses they had and to provide a service as a general blacksmith-as a kid it was fun standing in front of the smithy doors watching him work with the old furnace glowing red hot and the bellows to the side of it. I believed he retired in 1955 and the smithy became redundant, hence Father rented that part of the Horseshoe Inn (separate from the pub) as a garage until that September day in 1962. There is a photograph in "Wigan Streets" under Standish showing the Pub in 2003. When did it close?

Comment by: Alan on 1st April 2017 at 09:55

Is this OZY world or are we free to express our own comments. I suspect the later.

Comment by: Garry on 1st April 2017 at 09:59

Veronica, your right ha ha ha. I got the name wrong, but it's no big deal.

Comment by: Alex on 1st April 2017 at 10:02

GW it's April fool today not yesterday.

Comment by: Howard P on 1st April 2017 at 10:10

No D Tease your not on a different planet, I suspect it is you.lol

Comment by: WN1 Standisher on 1st April 2017 at 11:35

I think knowing Tom Robinson he would have laughed at the fact his shop became a funeral parlour. He used to like going across to the Horseshoe for a little tot late on. Used to go to Annie Parks, now also a funeral parlour, for our sherbert lemons.

Comment by: DTease on 1st April 2017 at 12:28

Good grief Alan! Don't you start suspecting as well. I'm having enough trouble with Howard P without you joining in!
My head's hurting now.

Comment by: Veronica on 1st April 2017 at 13:39

I suspect everyone has 'gone round the bend' on this one Barry - thanks for the photo and the laughter... And those with the sense of humour!

Comment by: I suspect on 1st April 2017 at 14:20

Ozy or is it Eddie, why be so ignorant to people towards their comments. Looking back at some of your comments, SUSPECT is word a well used by you.

Comment by: Howard P on 1st April 2017 at 15:39

Well said Julie, I suspect your right.

Comment by: cindy on 1st April 2017 at 17:22

The Horeshoe closed in January 2013

Comment by: Barrie on 1st April 2017 at 17:50

Thank you Cindy, an answer at last. I am surprised that it was only 4 years ago. Didn't really noticed in 2012 when we visited the old house in Moss Grove to look around. Weather was lousy that day.

Comment by: Garry on 1st April 2017 at 18:37

I suspect it's Sherry time, cheers.

Comment by: Veronica on 1st April 2017 at 19:48

Have one for me Garry.

Comment by: Ellen on 1st April 2017 at 20:12

Congrats, Garry. That last comment may well be the sanest of the debate on this contribution!.....at least in my humble opinion!

Comment by: DTease on 2nd April 2017 at 08:00

Just a little humour Ellen, to lighten the weary load.

Comment by: WN1 Standisher on 2nd April 2017 at 11:18

What about my sherbert lemons :)

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd April 2017 at 12:40

Free sherbet lemons with every prepaid funeral - compliments of Annie Parks! Does that round things up Standisher?

Comment by: w on 2nd April 2017 at 17:27

Might be cheeky and ask for bon bons :)

Comment by: Ellen on 2nd April 2017 at 23:49

D Tease,I agree whole heartedly, and have really enjoyed these recent series of comment in Album, and have sounded like a mad fool with my loud chuckles! My daughter actually thought I had succumbed to senility one day!!
