These photos were taken by Jack Smith, onetime assistant headmaster of Woodfield Primary School on Wigan Lane. He lived at Giant's Hall in the mid sixties (the photos were donated to Wigan Arch Soc by his sister-in-law Liz Smith).
actually it was not Jack that lived at Giants but his younger brother Brian. He lived in "The Cottage" when the house was divided in to 2 dwellings with his wife Elizabeth and 2 daughters. The house is now restored back into 1 dwelling and is still the home of the Gill family since its purchase from Standish Estate in 1920.
It was lot no 96 and was purchased by my Granfather...Alf. It had previously been rented along with other farms on the estate by his father, Joseph Henry and his father Robert. Now sadly no longer a farm..... but home to 40,000 trees.
