What a cracking photograph a reminder of now long gone day's. Allan, being a Aspull lad myself I just love these old pic's taken in our village "thanks Marra"
My grandmother had a similar construction at the back of her house. It was called 'the lean-to', forerunner of the conservatory.
That's a lovely summery photo Allen..one to be cherished for ever.
Sorry Allan..it seems I spelt your name wrong.
Thanks Allan,
Your picture speaks volumes!
Kenee,My youngest Son has just paid an arm and a leg for a Conservtory keeps telling me it's not a Lean to ( it is to me ) and a expensive one.
We had one of these in the house that I grew up in. My mate had one attached to their house as well. They called theirs ' the glass shed ' whereas we called ours ' the verandah '......Oooh! Chase me!....More tea vicar?
By gum you were posh in the 50's if you had a 'lean-to'! In a row of houses looking down the backyards you would see about 2 or 3 which meant usually the man of the house had built it. These men would be looked on as 'handy' the only drawback was there wasn't much room to 'peg' the washing out - what with the dust-bin and the coal bunker and the outside 'lavvy'! There was certainly no room to sunbathe!
VB,there was no room in our Back Yard in Spring View for Sunbathing used to go to the Trenchie to swim and Sunbathe .Only problem was I was always getting chased through the Long Grass by the Girls ,and I could never run fast.
A lot of the Conservatories today very quickly turn into an extra junk room. Once you've filled the Garage and the Garden Shed the Conservatory becomes very convenient for dumping the odds and ends that you don't know what to do with.....much to the annoyance of the missus.
I know you Alan I used to live on Bolton Road Alan across from the gerrard arms pub I know all of your family I used to be friends with your sister Margaret I used to hang around with her in the 70s how is keeping.
We used to call our lean to the glass place and in the winter when snow slid off the roof through the glass had a plank put on the gutter to stop it.
You are quite right VB, my grandmother's lean-to was built by my dad, he also built two greenhouses. The lean-to was used for drying washing (on a 'maiden'), it used to get very hot on sunny days.
Do you remember playing football and cricket and football behind your house on the old Gerrard Arms bowling green Photo of you and your mum as I remember both of you
Thanks everyone for the nice comments, Yes Julie I remember you, we are all fine thanks. Change down there now were we used to live, for the better I'm not to sure
I do remember them Granville, the Green as I we used to call it. Still remember the granny pit episode with the fishing rod, do you??
Yes I do a branch of a overhanging tree I was on snapped and I fell into two foot of stinking mud Only tin baths to get clean in those days Eric Brookes mentioned it when I saw him last year PS I worked with your brother in law George Smith in the sixtys
Bet you enjoyed every minute Jinksie. Kennee it wouldn't have been as costly building their own lean-to's as a conservatory is today-just a bit fancier and still freezing in winter without heating!
Vb,the girls did bless um..!Had a Brew in my Daughters very expensive lean to today stuck it out for 10 minutes to cold went inside.
