Dating from 1574 and formally"moated".
Winder ,do you mean formerly moatedas ?
When I saw the photograph I had presumed that it was located on the other side of Wigan. I am therefore now thinking that the owners land ownership spread across Wigan or is it a more modern name?
Alan, what I mean is, it had a moat around it.
Alan H, to make it simple, water round the building!
Philippines Cunliffe - the Gidlow family were freeholders in Aspull as far back as the 13th century.
I understand the Gidlow area of Wigan took its name from land holdings they had there.
Apologies for the misspelling of your name, Philip. Predictive text strikes again!
Mick....no problem as I frequently fall foul of predictive text. Thank you for the information
Wider and Gary, you are missing my point. There is a world of difference between formally and formerly.
Apologies to Garry for getting your name wrong.
Alan H. I see what you mean. Getting my formerly, formally mixed up.
It still has a moat.
What a beautiful building -is it still standing? If so whereabouts is it?
Back to school you lot!!
Vb, Gidlow Hall is in the fields between Bolton Rd and Pennington Green.
Thankyou Dennis I must look out for it.
Gidlow Hall is in Aspull. It says so top of the page.
I know it's in Aspull Gary I just wanted to know exactly where it is. (Being a woman ..I'm having the last word!). :- )
Ok, vb you win.x
I know I do Garry! x
vb. If you know Aspull go down Bolton Road towards Bolton, turn right a the old school down Dodd's Farm Lane follow the bend to the left the take the first right turn you can see the gates to Gidlow Hall. You can't enter but if you take the path to the right of the gates it passes the side of the Hall and leads to Pennington Green and Borsdane Wood. You can also view it on the website Gidlow Hall Photos. H.
While access to the hall is under discussion:-
In 1584 and 1586 there was a dispute over a right of way, when Thomas Gidlow claimed a footpath running from Gidlow Hall ‘westward across Roger Hindley's meadows called Longer Hey to the highway between Aspull Moor and Pennington Green, and so to Wigan.’
Thanks for the directions Harry- I did not know of the Hall's existence. I know where Dodd's Lane is so I will take a look sometime.
I visited Aspull in 2010 and took pics over the fence. A distant cousin from New Hampshire visited this summer and got inside the hedge to get some nice photos. I wish there was more history known of the place and where ancestors are buried. George Goodloe (Gidlow, Gudlawe, etc.) came to the colonies in 1651 and I am a seventh generation from the Virginia area where he landed.
