Growing up in Chorley Road, Standish in the 1960's I spent many a happy hour train spotting on the embankment behind the signal box in the photo. Steam locos used to belch out sparks and fires were a regular occurrence during the summer months. This kept the foliage down and made the embankment great for sliding down on using old bits of cardboard boxes. All overgrown now but I suppose this makes it more of a haven for wild life.

White Bear Station, Station Road, ADLINGTON. Baker, to me, it sounds like the line ran to Adlington!! Colin was correct.

Colin's right in the first place, then on to Adlington baker.

Yip baker, try and understand the railway network before correcting people, apologies wouldn't do no harm.

At this point, Boar's head station was situated here, the signal box built on the platform.

The station that was here was opened in 1869, that's when the lines to Chorley and Blackburn were first used.

Due to mining subsidence, the signal box, station and lines had to be lifted every now and then, they couldn't lift the buildings so this meant that you walked down two or three steps to get into the waiting room!
That story is from someone who used the station.

Thanks for the photo, Phillip.

Cheers for that Winder.
The station closed in 1949.

Adlington station (still open) is on the Manchester Preston line.
White Bear station was on the Boars Head Chorley line.

Garry, are you being awkward?

Comment by: Garry on 1st December 2016 at 15:20

Winder, what make you think that!

Finally; right hand junction! Red Rock; Adlington White Bear. The site became Faircloughs. Shortly north, the line joined the Manchester to Preston. This at the A6. I think the original concrete over bridge, just before the junction remains. I will investigate.
